Electric heating for vinyl & linoleum floors

FloorTec is the purpose-designed overlay route for compatible vinyl, LVT and linoleum. MD mats and UltraTec cable provide embedded alternatives where a self-levelling-compound build-up is more appropriate.

Plan the complete system

What you’ll need for a FloorTec floor system

FloorTec protects the heating layer and creates the smooth, stable surface required beneath resilient floor finishes. Plan the mat, insulation, vapour barriers, panels, controls and final covering as one compatible system.

  • A prepared, level, stable, clean and dry subfloor
  • The required 5mm insulating underlay and specified vapour-barrier layers
  • A correctly sized 140W foil heating mat and FloorTec DuoFloor boards
  • A compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor
  • Compatible vinyl, LVT or linoleum approved for underfloor heating

Typical FloorTec floor build-up

The upper vapour barrier separates the heating mat from the two staggered FloorTec panel layers. A lower vapour barrier is also used over concrete subfloors. Always follow the current FloorTec, heating and flooring instructions.

  1. Prepared subfloor, with lower vapour barrier where required over concrete
  2. 5mm insulating underlay
  3. 140W foil heating mat and floor sensor
  4. Protective vapour barrier and staggered FloorTec DuoFloor panels
  5. Compatible vinyl, LVT or linoleum floor finish

Planning your project

Electric underfloor heating for vinyl & linoleum: FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about planning, buying and installing the FloorTec system beneath compatible resilient floors.

What is the FloorTec underfloor heating system?

FloorTec combines a 140W/m² foil-backed heating mat with a two-layer FloorTec DuoFloor overlay. The panels protect the heating layer and create a smooth, stable surface for compatible vinyl, LVT or linoleum.

Can FloorTec be used beneath Amtico and Karndean?

FloorTec can be used beneath compatible vinyl and LVT products, including suitable Amtico and Karndean ranges. Obtain approval, adhesive requirements and maximum floor-temperature limits for the exact flooring product before installation.

What do I need to buy for a complete FloorTec system?

You will need the correctly sized 140W foil heating mat, 5mm insulating underlay, the specified vapour barrier, sufficient FloorTec DuoFloor panels, a compatible thermostat and floor sensor. The heating mat and FloorTec boards are purchased separately.

Why are FloorTec DuoFloor boards required?

Resilient finishes need a smooth and stable base. The two staggered FloorTec panel layers spread loads, protect the foil heating mat and provide the surface onto which the approved finished flooring can be installed.

Where do the vapour barriers go?

A protective vapour barrier is installed above the foil heating mat and below the FloorTec panels. A lower vapour barrier is also used beneath the insulating underlay when the base is concrete. Follow the current FloorTec instructions for the project subfloor.

Can the vinyl or linoleum be bonded to FloorTec?

Use only a flooring and adhesive combination approved for the FloorTec construction. Keep the heating switched off while bonded finishes are installed and until the adhesive has fully cured, then increase the floor temperature gradually in line with the manufacturers’ instructions.

How do I choose the correct heating-mat size?

Measure the usable free floor area and exclude fixed furniture or other areas that must not be heated. Heating cable cannot be shortened. The 7m² and 9m² options, and sizes above 10m², are supplied as two heating mats that are connected in parallel.

Can MD mats or UltraTec cable be used beneath vinyl or linoleum?

They can form part of a compatible embedded build-up when the heating element is fully covered with a suitable self-levelling compound before the approved floor finish is installed. Confirm covering depth, adhesive, thermal resistance and temperature limits.

Do I need a thermostat, floor sensor and electrician?

Use a compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor to keep the finished floor within its permitted temperature. Electrical testing, connection and certification must be completed in accordance with the product instructions and applicable regulations by a suitably qualified electrician.
