Electric Underfloor Heating for Carpet Floors

Comfortable electric underfloor heating for compatible carpet and underlay combinations.

FloorTec combines a 140W foil heating mat with DuoFloor overlay boards to create a protected, stable surface beneath carpet while allowing warmth to pass through efficiently.

Choose the right system

Electric heating for carpet floors

FloorTec is the purpose-designed overlay route for compatible carpet and underlay. MD mats and UltraTec cable provide embedded alternatives where a self-levelling-compound build-up is more appropriate.

Plan the complete system

What you’ll need for a FloorTec floor system

FloorTec protects the heating layer and creates a stable surface beneath carpet. Plan the mat, insulation, vapour barriers, panels, controls, carpet and any additional underlay as one compatible system.

  • A prepared, level, stable, clean and dry subfloor
  • The required 5mm insulating underlay and specified vapour-barrier layers
  • A correctly sized 140W foil heating mat and FloorTec DuoFloor boards
  • A compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor
  • Compatible carpet and any additional underlay approved for underfloor heating and normally no more than 2.5 TOG combined

Typical FloorTec floor build-up

The upper vapour barrier separates the heating mat from the two staggered FloorTec panel layers. Carpet can be installed directly over FloorTec, or with a compatible carpet underlay where required, provided the combined thermal resistance remains within the specified limit. A lower vapour barrier is also used over concrete subfloors.

  1. Prepared subfloor, with lower vapour barrier where required over concrete
  2. 5mm insulating underlay
  3. 140W foil heating mat and floor sensor
  4. Protective vapour barrier and staggered FloorTec DuoFloor panels
  5. Compatible carpet, with approved carpet underlay if required

Electric underfloor heating for carpet: FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about planning, buying and installing the FloorTec system beneath compatible carpet and underlay.

What is the FloorTec underfloor heating system?

FloorTec combines a 140W/m² foil-backed heating mat with a two-layer FloorTec DuoFloor overlay. The panels protect the heating layer and create a stable surface for compatible carpet and underlay.

Can any carpet be used with FloorTec?

No. The carpet and any separate underlay must be approved by their manufacturers for use with underfloor heating. Confirm their temperature limits, fixing method and thermal resistance before installation.

What do I need to buy for a complete FloorTec system?

You will need the correctly sized 140W foil heating mat, 5mm insulating underlay, the specified vapour barrier, sufficient FloorTec DuoFloor panels, a compatible thermostat and floor sensor. The heating mat and FloorTec boards are purchased separately.

What TOG rating is suitable for carpet and underlay?

The combined carpet and additional underlay rating should normally not exceed 2.5 TOG. The FloorTec, carpet and underlay manufacturers’ stated limits take priority, and every layer must be approved for use with underfloor heating.

Where do the vapour barriers go?

A protective vapour barrier is installed above the foil heating mat and below the FloorTec panels. A lower vapour barrier is also used beneath the insulating underlay when the base is concrete. Follow the current FloorTec instructions for the project subfloor.

Do I need a separate carpet underlay above FloorTec?

Not necessarily. Compatible carpet can be installed directly over the FloorTec panels. If an additional carpet underlay is required, it must be suitable for underfloor heating and the combined carpet-and-underlay TOG rating must remain within the permitted limit.

How should carpet be fixed over FloorTec?

A double-stick method or suitable tackifier adhesive is normally recommended, subject to the carpet manufacturer’s instructions. If gripper rods and a stretch method are used, install the grippers before the heating system and ensure their top surface is level with the finished FloorTec or underlay surface so the heating layers cannot be damaged.

Can MD mats or UltraTec cable be used beneath carpet?

They can form part of a compatible embedded build-up when the heating element is fully covered with a suitable self-levelling compound before the approved carpet and underlay are installed. Confirm covering depth, combined TOG rating and temperature limits.

Do I need a thermostat, floor sensor and electrician?

Use a compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor to keep the finished floor within its permitted temperature. Electrical testing, connection and certification must be completed in accordance with the product instructions and applicable regulations by a suitably qualified electrician.
