Electric Underfloor Heating for Wood & Laminate Floors

Comfortable, even electric underfloor heating designed for compatible laminate and engineered wood floors.

WoodTec is the straightforward, low-profile solution for floating floors. Plan the complete build-up, insulation and floor-temperature control together for reliable performance.

Choose the right system

Electric heating for wood & laminate floors

For most compatible floating laminate and engineered wood floors, WoodTec is the simplest direct solution. MD mats and UltraTec cable offer embedded alternatives when the project needs a different layout or floor construction.

Recommended direct solution

WoodTec 140W Foil Heating Mat

Purpose-designed for compatible floating laminate and engineered wood floors

  • 140W/m² foil-backed mat distributes heat evenly
  • Just 2.8mm thick to help minimise floor build-up
  • Installed with the required 5mm XPS insulating underlay
  • Multiple mats can be connected in parallel for larger rooms

200W/m² Elektra MD Electric Underfloor Heating Mat

Embedded alternative

MD Heating Mats

A pre-spaced option for regular-shaped areas where a covered heating layer is preferred

  • Fast installation across regular open floor areas
  • Available in different outputs to suit the project design
  • Must be fully covered with a suitable self-levelling compound
  • Floor finish and complete build-up must be approved for underfloor heating

UltraTec Electric Ultra Thin Undertile Heating Cable

Flexible alternative

UltraTec Heating Cable

A loose-cable route for irregular rooms, detailed layouts and awkward floor areas

  • Flexible spacing around fixed furniture and obstacles
  • Useful for narrow, curved or unusually shaped areas
  • Must be fully covered with a suitable self-levelling compound
  • Compatible wood, vinyl or carpet can then form part of the approved build-up

Plan the complete system

What you’ll need for a WoodTec floor system

WoodTec combines a slim foil heating mat with the insulating layer and controls needed for a compatible floating floor. Size the heated area before ordering and plan every layer as one system.

  • A prepared, stable, clean and dry subfloor
  • The required 5mm XPS insulating underlay below the WoodTec mat
  • Correctly sized WoodTec mat or mats covering approximately 85–90% of the free floor area
  • A compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor
  • Compatible floating laminate or engineered wood approved for underfloor heating

Typical WoodTec floor build-up

Compatible laminate or engineered wood can be laid directly over WoodTec, with no additional underlay above the mat. Always follow the heating and flooring manufacturers’ instructions.

  1. Prepared, stable subfloor
  2. 5mm XPS insulating underlay
  3. WoodTec 140W foil heating mat
  4. Floor sensor and electrical connection
  5. Compatible laminate or engineered wood floor

Electric underfloor heating for wood & laminate: FAQs

Clear answers to common questions about selecting, sizing and installing electric heating beneath compatible floating floors.

Is WoodTec suitable for laminate and engineered wood?

Yes. WoodTec is designed for compatible floating laminate and engineered wood flooring. Always confirm that the chosen flooring is approved by its manufacturer for use with electric underfloor heating.

Is 5mm XPS insulating underlay required?

Yes. A 5mm XPS insulating underlay is an essential part of the WoodTec installation. It sits below the foil heating mat and helps the system operate effectively.

Can the flooring be laid directly over WoodTec?

Compatible floating laminate or engineered wood can be laid directly over the WoodTec mat, without another underlay above it. Follow the WoodTec instructions and the flooring manufacturer’s installation requirements.

Can I use solid wood flooring?

Engineered wood is generally more dimensionally stable for heated floors than solid timber. Do not assume a solid wood product is suitable: obtain written approval and temperature limits from the flooring manufacturer before specifying the system.

What floor-temperature limit should I use?

Use the maximum temperature stated by the flooring manufacturer and configure a compatible thermostat and floor sensor accordingly. The permitted limit varies by flooring product, so it should be confirmed before installation.

How much of the floor should the heating mat cover?

WoodTec mats are normally planned to cover approximately 85–90% of the free floor area. Exclude fixed furniture and other areas that the installation instructions say must not be heated.

Can I connect more than one WoodTec mat?

Yes. Multiple correctly sized mats can be connected in parallel for larger rooms. Heating mats must not be shortened, and the electrical load, testing and final connection should be checked by a suitably qualified electrician.

Can MD mats or UltraTec cable be used under wood, vinyl or carpet?

They can form part of a compatible build-up when the heating system is fully covered with a suitable self-levelling compound before the approved floor finish is installed. Confirm the covering depth, thermal resistance and floor-temperature limits for every layer.

Do I need a thermostat, floor sensor and electrician?

Use a compatible thermostat and correctly positioned floor sensor to control the system within the flooring manufacturer’s limits. Electrical testing, connection and certification must be completed in accordance with the product instructions and applicable regulations by a suitably qualified electrician.
